Open Day success: 'Giant Mutant Newt' discovered at Denmark Farm

Denmark Farm Conservation Centre's Summer Open Day on Sunday 2nd August was a resounding success. Over 150 visitors came along to enjoy a live performance highlighting how climate change is affecting our wildlife, performed by Cardigan-based Small World Theatre.

In addition there were garden displays, plant stalls, pony rides, pond dipping, refreshments, 'eco footprint' making and the usual waymarked trails through woodland and meadow. The Mutant Newt is a 20-foot model made by Small World Theatre and Natural Links participants. The newt has now been re-homed by the Farm Pond and will be lurking in the undergrowth for the rest of the summer, after which it will most likely go into hibernation in order to survive our cold wet winter.

If you are in the area why not call in to see the giant newt? The site is open to visitors every day. Please also consider that the Shared Earth Trust always welcomes support to help look after all our wildlife and to foster awareness of the importance of biodiversity.

Wildlife Helpline covers broad mix

The Trust's Wildlife Helpline has now completed over 40 consultations. They cover a broad mix of complex land management issues, from wildlife gardening tips to how to deal with animal road casualties. The land management consultations mainly concern grassland restoration, followed by requests for guidance on hedgerow and woodland restoration, plus several queries on pond creation and management. Our series of practical habitat restoration guide booklets are particularly useful for those who cannot come to Denmark Farm.

Contact us if you want to help wildlife on your land, in your garden or community area, or if you have a question or concern about wildlife in your locality.
